ISSUE

The teacher’s keeping a close eye on her because she “never listens” … but it’s her hearing problem that no one sees.

THE ISSUE:

Ensuring our children enter school ready to succeed is essential for the success of this community. Studies show that much of a child’s development happens before age 6, and most rapidly before age 3. Many children in our community don’t receive the necessary nurturing, interaction and health care needed for them to develop and succeed because of poverty or lack of health insurance — leading to developmental neglect.  SEE STATS

RESULTS:

In 2003 United Way helped more than 700 kids in this community be better prepared to enter and succeed in school through early screenings for vision, hearing and mental health.  SEE ACTIONS
